top mystery book series

I often get asked what my top mystery book series are. It was tough to do, but I’ve narrowed it down to the top 5. These are the ones I return to over and over when I’m in need of a trustworthy read–I know they will deliver every time!

So without further ado, here’s a list of my top mystery book series recommendations, in no particular order. The order changes with my mood, depending on what type of comfort I need–gritty P.I. work or a cat who figures out who the villain is before anyone else.

My Top Mystery Book Series Recommendations

The Claire Malloy Mysteries by Joan Hess
Claire, a mild-mannered bookseller, lives with her teenage daughter who tends to SPEAK IN ALL CAPITALS. {If you have a daughter, you totally get this.} Ms. Hess’ books are lol funny, and I delight in each and every one. It’s amazing how much trouble Claire can get into; each plot is intricately woven and the characters are just like the people in your own little town. I adore these! I guarantee that when you read one of these books, they too will be on your top mystery series recommendations list!

The Cat Who Series by Lillian Jackson-Braun
If you love cozies and cats, but you haven’t read this much-loved series, you must read them immediately {after you finish reading this post, thank you.} I’m personally not a fan of the talking pet cozies–these cats don’t speak…but they always get their point across (finally) to their pet human, Qwill. Lovable characters and excellent plots, plus one of the smartest cats you’ll ever “meet.”  What’s not to love?

The Stephanie Plum Series by Janet Evanovich
OMG! I never knew a mystery could make me laugh out loud so often and so uproariously! Ms. Evanovich has created characters you can’t help but cheer for, even though they are full of personal flaws. A friend of mine recommended the series very early on (Maybe 3 To Get Deadly?) and I mark on my calendar the date each new one will be released. Fast paced and fun.

The Myrtle Clover Series by Elizabeth Craig
This is a new series to me, though it’s not to many of you, I’m sure. I came across Ms. Craig’s blog when I started writing my first book, Blogging is Murder, and her writing advice was so sound that I had to check out one of her cozies. I was hooked on virtual page 1! Of course, being a retired English teacher, Myrtle is a woman I can relate to. This new addition totally deserves to be on my top mystery book series! Solid plots and great writing! (If you are a wanna-be cozy writer, you’ve gotta check out her blog!)

The Kinsey Millhone Series by Sue Grafton
I still remember the day I discovered Grafton’s series as an early 20 something. I was still an undergraduate English major who read mysteries as a way to cleanse my pallet after reading all the heavy classic literature my major required. The librarian in the public library in Troy, Ohio recommended Sue Grafton, and I’ve been hooked every since! I’ve read each book over and over again, and I’m not ashamed to say that in my world, Kinsey Milhone is a real person! 🙂 Tight plots and a female protagonist we can totally relate to! Reading about Kinsey’s newest adventure is enough to make me look into being a P.I. (a secret fantasy I’ve had since I was in elementary school.)

In my mind, Claire, Stephanie, Lulu, Koko and Yum Yum, Myrtle and Kinsey are real. I know all of their adventures chapter and verse. I anxiously await when Stephanie’s next car will explode and look forward to the next time Kinsey drags out her little black dress that can withstand anything that befalls it. These are the standards to which I hold myself. May I do them proud!
